Ventura E-waste (Juanamaria Elementary School)

When buying appliances, we only get to see the outer shell of the electronic equipment that we paid for. We check on its features and service warranty. Unless its casing breaks, we do not get to actually see the interior of our television set including its circuit boards, electrical connections and wiring.  After a more thorough check, it is only then that we realize that out television set consists of valuable and toxic components.

Most, it not all of the electric equipment that we own contain lead, mercury, arsenic, cadmium, copper, beryllium, barium, chromium, nickel, zinc, silver and gold. Most of these elements can be found in the circuit boards and the appliance’s electrical parts like its computer chips, wiring and monitor. Electrical products also contain flame retardants that are hazardous to health. Arsenic exposure can result to cardiovascular diseases, cancer and diabetes. Cadmium affects the body’s ability to consume calcium resulting to the weakening of the bones.
