Greenpeace broke a Facebook world record with over 50,000 comments on a single Facebook post in 11 hours. Greenpeace now hopes to get over 100,000 comments before the day is over.

Why did Greenpeace make an effort to break the record? According to Yahoo News:

“We want them to ‘unfriend’ coal and ‘Like’ green energy,” said Greenpeace spokesman Daniel Kessler, who estimated that a dozen volunteers greeted Facebook employees as they arrived the startup’s campus in the Silicon Valley city of Palo Alto.

“We think a lot of Facebook employees will be on our side, so we are trying to recruit them.”

Facebook is currently working towards minimizing energy usage in its data centers, but Greenpeace wants them to go one step further and use clean energy for its power source.

According to Treehugger, Greenpeace would like Facebook to take these 5 steps:

  1. Come clean: Disclosure of energy and carbon footprint
  2. Infrastructure siting policy — make it a priority to place data centers where renewable energy is plentiful.
  3. Increase the supply of clean energy through power purchase agreements or renewable energy credits; investing in clean energy programs directly; or generating their own clean energy on-site
  4. Become clean energy advocates
  5. Educate Facebook users about clean energy and how we can all sign up for using clean energy.
