Pro Sports Teams Score Green Points

Major League Baseball’s opening day has come and gone, but the Seattle Mariners have stepped up to the plate by announcing the Green Sports Alliance.

This initiative, facilitated by the Natural Resources Defense Council, will work to promote environmentally-friendly practices and products in all major professional sports leagues. Current members include the Seattle Mariners, the Seattle Seahawks, the Portland Trail Blazers, the Seattle Storm, the Seattle Sounders FC, and the Vancouver Canucks.

Although the current goals are vague, likely projects include:

  • Installing solar panels
  • Offering local food
  • Recycling
  • Increasing awareness about green issues

There is also significant potential for education. Athletes and sports teams are influencers and have the ability to reach a large audience. Any message that they send out will reach thousands of fans each game. Quest Stadium, for example, has seating for 67,000 people.

What green initiative would you like to see these teams take?
