BPA-Free Receipts on the Rise

BPA, or bisphenol A, in cash register receipts may soon be on the decline. Yum! Brands, a fast food giant that includes Taco Bell, KFC, and Pizza Hut, recently announced plans to transition away from using receipt paper containing BPA.

The health hazards of the chemical are well-known, but the long-term effects are unclear. We do know that medical studies claim that BPA wrecks havoc on the human endocrine, and nervous system.

BPA in receipts is a concern because it can contaminate food and drink. According to the LA Times:

Tests showed that holding a receipt for 10 seconds could transfer as much as 2.5 micrograms of the chemical onto human skin. And ‘testers transferred much higher amounts, about 15 times as much, by rubbing receipts,’ the researchers reported.

We’re happy to see Yum! Brands make this step to go All Green and hope to see other corporations follow soon.
