2010 Ties for the Warmest Year on Record

The warmest years on record are 2005 and 2010, according to government climate experts.

The average temperature last year was 1.12 degrees Fahrenheit (or 0.62 degrees Celsius) above normal—the same as in 2005. Land temperatures were 1.80 above normal, the warmest on record, while ocean temperatures were 0.88 above average, the third warmest on record.

“The warmth this year reinforces the notion that we are seeing climate change,” said David Easterling, chief of scientific services at the climatic data center. This is reinforced by the fact that 9 of the last 10 warmest years on record occurred after the year 2000. The exception was 1998, which was the third warmest year since 1880.
